Yellow registration forms have gone home with all students.  Please have a discussion with your child about their elective classes for next year and sign the registration form.  Forms should be returned to Mrs. Barter ASAP!  The sooner the form is in, the more likely the child has to get their elective choices.  So please, if you haven’t seen this form, ask about it!

Hi everyone,

Last week, (as I’m sure you all know) the Book of Hours was completed and turned in, and I have to say that many of them were absolutely wonderful!  It is amazing what these students have accomplished.  The writing was great, and the art and book binding were really something to see.  Many of them are on display in the display cases in the downstairs hallway, and the rest are in the classroom.  Thank you all for your support is this great learning activity.

Shakespearean monologues and sonnets begin tomorrow and continue for the rest of the week.  Parents are more than welcome to come and watch if they would like to do so.  It’s always fun to see the costumes the kids wear all day, and to hear them recite their renditions of the Shakespearean passages.  Many students are a little nervous about these recitations, and helping them to be prepared is very helpful.  I’m sure many of you will be listening to them tonight as they get ready for their big presentation.

I am proud to say that all students in the 3rd and 4th hour classes took an essay test during class time, and 97% of students were able to write a 5 paragraph essay correctly in under 40 minutes.  THEY CAN DO IT!  YEA!!!

Final exams will be next week.  I have told students that our final exam will be a recitation of one of the poems they learned this year.  :)  They will “draw a poem” out of the basket, and that will be the one for them to recite.

It’s been a great year- I can’t believe how fast it flew by and how much they have all grown- both physically, and academically!

Math Update

In Algebra the students will begin their review for the finals next week. Their final will be on Tuesday May 15th.

In Pre-algebra the students have been working on graphing equations. They will have a review next week and a final on Wednesday May 16th.

We are getting down to the home stretch.  Please check online and with your student regarding missing assignments. Many students have let some big things slide and should still be touching base with teachers to make sure those get in, even if there is a late grade or they are not fully complete.  In science we are breezing through weather and climate and review some earth and space science. We will be doing a short body systems project May 7-11th to finish out the year before beginning to review for our final exam. If your student will not be here that last week of school, please have them contact teachers regarding any finals and we will make accommodations.

On another note, the end of the year for me personally may be a little hectic as my wife is due with our second child on May 10th, so I may be dropping from the scene quite rapidly, but will do my best to ensure to year ends as smoothly as possible.

Mr. Walker

Hi all,

Well, it’s been an exciting week for me, personally!  I was out Monday, because my son and his wife just had their first baby, which makes me a GRANDMOTHER!  lol  Very exciting for our family.

The rest of this week, we have finished up the respective Shakespearean plays in each class (3rd hour has just a couple pages left to read!)  Students have been reminded to work on their Book of Hours which is due next week.  Speaking of this project, I have repeatedly told students NOT to go out and spend a lot of money on this project.  Scrapbooking materials, foil, left over materials, etc., will work just fine.  The content of the story is the most important criteria.  The artwork involved should be done by the student and  hand drawn. Some students have chosen to use “stamps” and that is fine, but you are NOT obligated to out and purchase them.  I have more than enough supplies in my classroom for students to borrow if needed.

Monologues/sonnets will be recited on May 9th, 10th and 11th.  Please help your child gather materials for their costume!  Extra credit will be given to those students wearing their costume all day!!

Seward trip is next week!  Students should arrive at Romig between 6 and 6:15 AM!  The bus will leave promptly at 6:30, and if the student misses the bus, they miss the trip!  Make sure they dress warmly.  NO open toed shoes/clogs, etc. can be worn on the boat.  Students are welcome to bring cameras, etc., but at their own risk.  It’s a long day, and a sack lunch with drink is REQUIRED!   They do not sell food/drink on the boat.

Mr. Bruce and I are traveling on Monday, and any parent that would like to bring us hot chocolate (me) or coffee (Mr. Bruce), (Mr. G.) will have us eternally grateful!  ha!

Finally, many students have been hearing the rumors about my leaving Romig, and it is true.  I will be retiring from teaching at the end of this school year.

Enjoy your weekend!

Math Update

In Algebra the students just completed a unit on graphing and solving quadratic equations. I hope they were able to sing you the quadratic formula. If not please ask your child to sing you the quadratic formula song. They will begin a new unit on simplifying radicals. Their next quiz will be Friday, April 27th.

In Pre-algebra the students have been working with geometry. They have explored how to calculate area and perimeter of polygons. They have also worked with calculating surface area and volume of cylinders, prisms, and cones. They will finish their unit on geometry next week with a quiz on Friday, April 27th.

Science Update

We are currently studying different sources of energy and will be discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each on Friday as well as looking at available energy sources in Alaska and the unique energy needs of our state.  There will be an exam on April 25th (3rd and 5th) and 26th (4th and 6th) over waves, sound, light, and energy.  Progress reports were send home today for 3rd and 5th period classes and will be sent home tomorrow for 4th and 6th.

Thanks.

Mr. Walker

Students have been told what day they would be attending the field trip and should have brought that information home yesterday along with some information on what to bring, timing, etc.  I have provided a link to that document below.  If for some reason your student must go on a particular day, such as an appointment or other family obligation, please let us know ASAP so we can make adjustments.  We put a lot of effort into balancing out the trip so students get to go with at least some of their friends. Please pay particular attention to the drop off (6 am) and pick up (5:30 pm) times and make arrangements in advance. Also, students are responsible for all food and it is a long day, so please provide them with lunch and snacks.  More information will be coming about what we will be doing during the school days for those staying behind, however, students will be attending their non-team classes as normal and are expected to be in school during those days.

Caribbean Team Seward Field

Hi,

Just a reminder that during the blocking days this week (Wed. 3rd/5th and Thursday, 4th/6th) students will be given time to work on their Book of Hours.  They should bring in their writing, and any materials they need to work on this extensive project.  I have many art materials in the classroom that they are welcome to use as well.  Students should also be gathering together items for their costume for the monologues and sonnets.  Those recitations are May 9,10, and 11.  Book of Hours is due on May 2nd and 3rd.  For those students going on the Seward trip May 2nd, they will need to turn in their project on May 1st.

Have a great week.

Math Update

In Algebra the students have been working on solving quadratic equations by the square root method and completing the square. They will learn the quadratic formula and how to solve quadratic equations with the quadratic formula. They will have a chapter 10 test on Friday, April 20th.

In Pre-algebra the students have been working with geometry. They have explored surface area and volume of polygons, prisms, and cylinders. Next week we will continue our geometry unit and have a quiz on Thursday, April 19th.

The math student of the week is Clair DeGeorge for her testing excellence!
